Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is taking part in the 100,000 genomes project. This project aims to collect and interpret 100,000 sets of human genes. This will lead to a greater understanding of rare diseases, whilst potentially offering patients a diagnosis where there wasn’t one before.
Of the 207 diseases that are being recruited to the 100,000 genomes project, 16 are cardiac conditions. So far, 86 Evelina London paediatric patients and their family members have taken part. The Trust hopes that within 2 years, they will identify a genetic cause for these patients’ heart condition. This research will help improve diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and other genetic conditions in the future.
