At least 1–2 visits per month, each lasting approximately 2–3 hours.

Daytime, twilight or weekend visits

What the role involves

• Representing ECHO for families on children’s cardiac wards and departments across the Evelina London & St Thomas Hosptial.
• Visiting each bed space to share ECHO information and resources.
• Listening and talking with parents and family members, providing emotional support, guidance, and practical information.
• Providing resources, books and games when needed.
• Updating notice boards to ensure all ECHO information is current.
• Maintaining the parents’ room, keeping it safe, clean, and welcoming for families.
• Assessing ECHO equipment and report any faults to ward staff and the ECHO team.
• Refering families to ECHO for further follow-up support.
• Providing feedback to the Volunteer Coordinator after each ward visit.
• Maintaining confidential records and work in accordance with ECHO policies.

• Someone riendly, professional, and able to represent ECHO positively.
• Someone with excellent communication and listening skills.
• Someone compassionate and motivated to support families during high-stress periods.
• Someone understanding of patient and parent confidentiality.
• Someone able to work independently or collaboratively with another volunteer.

Requirements of role

• Full DBS check.
• Adherence to the volunteer application procedures set by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust.
• Completion of the full ECHO hospital volunteer induction, including training sessions and practical ward experience with ECHO staff and experienced volunteers.

Visits usually take place with two volunteers, so you can either be matched with another volunteer or come with a friend.
